Habitat: Mesic to dry upland forests and well-drained floodplain forests; grows in a variety of soils, but somewhat restricted to base-rich soils in the Coastal Plain. Common in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the coastal Plain.
Wildlife Value: This plant attracts moths, mammals, and several types of bees. Dead stems are used by stem-nesting bees.
