Additional Info

Open forests, woodlands, clearings, meadows, and roadsides. Frequent to common in the mountains; infrequent in the piedmont; rare in the coastal Plain. It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soil but does best in moist, well-drained soil in full sun

Wildlife value: Ground nesting bee (Holcopasites heliopis) is a specialist. Seeds for birds in fall and winter.Finches love the seeds.
