Mesic to more often dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, clearings, old fields, forest edges, meadows, and roadsides; usually on moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the mountains; frequent in the piedmont; rare in the coastal Plain.
Wildlife Value: Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Ruby-throated hummingbirds and butterflies nectar from the blooms. Members of the genus Monarda support the specialized bees
