Habitat: Mesic to dry upland forests, woodlands, shaded outcrops, well-drained floodplain forests, seepage swamps, and fens. Common in the Piedmont and mountains; infrequent in the n. Coastal Plain; absent from se. Virginia.
Wildlife Value: Notable for attracting wildlife. Seeds edible by birds and small mammals. Host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly. Flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies.
