Habitat: wet meadows, transition areas; poor soils

Wildlife value: This plant is a larval host for butterflies, including Common Wood-Nymph (Cercyonis pegala) larvae and various Skipper larvae. Adult Common Wood-Nymph butterflies feed on rotting fruit and flower nectar. Small birds utilize the seed in winter when other food supplies are limited. Broomsedge bluestem provides cover for ground nesting birds such as quail and turkeys.
