Habitat: Mesic to rather dry upland forests; occasionally in well-drained floodplain forests. Common in the mountains and piedmont; rare in the coastal Plain.
Wildlife Value: This plant supports Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) larvae. Adult Black Swallowtail butterflies feed on flower nectar from thistles, milkweed and red clover.
