Additional Info

Habitat: Tidal freshwater marshes, ponds, swamps, ditches, seeps, alluvial forests, stream margins, and wet disturbed areas. Frequent to locally common throughout Virginia.

Wildlife value: Underground tubers are preferred by at least fifteen species of ducks and by snapping turtles. The tall, arrow-shaped leaves of this plant create shade and protection for frogs and their tadpoles. Frogs perch on its sturdy stems, while its submerged portions offer a safe space for tadpole development.

Notes: Can become weedy
