Alluvial swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, tidal swamps, maritime swamps, mucky hollows of seepage swamps, wet flatwoods, freshwater and oligohaline tidal marshes, semipermanently inundated rocky bars and shores, old beaver ponds, and other impoundments; most characteristic of shaded, shallowly seasonally flooded soils. Common in the coastal Plain; frequent in the piedmont; rare in the mountains; often forms large colonies.
